A Free Home for your Ski Area Narratives

If you have .htm or .html pages -- skiing related -- hosted on an .edu site, a free server site, or some other hosting service, you may want to host it on SkierNet.com instead...

If you're tired of the pesky "pop-ups" and clumsy URLs of a free server, or if you've seen your pages vanish from an .edu site, or perhaps nobody can ever find your page. Or you simply want a "back-up" location for your web page; that's fine too. Whatever the case, if you've got skiing webpages, SkierNet is your free home on the web.

Content Requirements...

You visited a ski area and were inspired to write about it. Perhaps you took a few pictures as well. Eventually you made a web page about it. Or perhaps you have ten such pages about different ski areas, or maybe a page about a favorite run. Even if it's just a single photo with a paragraph of text, that's fine. If you have such a page in .htm or .html format, we will host it at no charge. It will look very much like this page, with links on the left, a banner ad at the top, and your content in this part of the page. Also, you must own all rights to the content.

What we will not host...

Non-skiing pages, snowboarding-only pages, pages with profanity or profane content. We also don't want photo only pages. We won't host pages about skiing books, or info about your restaurant near such and such ski area. We won't host non-original or otherwise copyrighted material. Also, affiliate links and advertisements will be deleted or rendered non-functional.

Why it's good for you, and why it's good for SkierNet.com...

The advantages are that you won't have any pop-up advertisements, no spyware is forced on you, and we don't send you any junk e-mail, newsletters, or other nonsense. We don't force you to register or give us an address or telephone number. We don't sell e-mail addresses. But perhaps more importantly, we link your ski area page from our specific SkierNet state pages, so you will have thousands of people reading your words. (If nobody ever reads your webpage, what's the point of having one?). We'll host it indefinitely, even if you never contact us again. And if you change your mind, we'll delete it as soon as you say so. Last but not least, you can't beat the price: It's free.

So what's in it for us? I've always personally believed that reviews and reports written by individuals are more informative and interesting than anything written by a ski journalist or a ski area public relations specialist. The web hosting is paid for by the advertisements at the top and sides of the page, so we can afford to do it. This is a website by skiers, for skiers, and the more ski area reports and articles we have, the better off we are, and the better informed our users are. More content results in more users. Some of the affiliate advertising on certain pages returns a modest profit; the more satisfied users we have, the better off the site will be.

The founders of this site are lifelong skiers, and wished to create an on-line version of an all-encompassing skier's guidebook (like the cool ones from the 1960s and 1970s). This site concept came from the old portal concept...if you remember the early days of the web, people would publish their writings and photos on personal pages. The current search domination by Yahoo!, Google, Overture, etc. has made these types of pages harder and harder to find. Our goal is to make SkierNet.com a true resource in the original spirit of the internet.

How to participate...

Please send an e-mail to rick(at)skiernet(dot)com. You may include a link to an existing page (and we'll attempt to transfer it) or you may simply add an .htm or .html attachment, and attach any photos as well. DO NOT SEND .TXT FILES, .DOC FILES, .PPT FILES, OR ANY OTHER NON-HTM FORMAT. Last but not least, cut and paste the following statement into your e-mail:

The material I am submitting for use on SkierNet.com was created by me, and/or I own the material and any copyrights, including all text and photos. I understand that I retain all rights to this material. I understand that I am responsible for this material, it is merely hosted on SkierNet.com. I permit SkierNet.com to use this material on a webpage. I understand that I am receiving free web hosting in return for this usage. I have also read and agree to the SkierNet.com free hosting agreement.

So that's it; copy and paste that paragraph, and e-mail it and your materials (or a link to your existing page) to rick(at)skiernet(dot)com. The "free hosting agreement" is found below.

Whew. We just want to provide good content to the skiing community without being sued for it. If lawyers would stop harrassing productive people on behalf of a litigious society, people could be more productive.
